Mountain bikes FAQs

My son is ready to start riding his first bike. Should we use training wheels?

This is a good question. Some parents think that the best way to teach a child is to simply give him a bike and let him figure out what to do with it. It could take a while to learn, but at least he will not have to learn to ride a bike twice. On the other hand, others feel that it is easier for the child to use training wheels because this helps build the child’s confidence. Although the choice depends a lot on parenting style, it may not be a bad idea to use the training wheels at first so that your child does not need to learn too many new things at once.

What is the most important piece of equipment I need to ride a bike?

Even though there are many items and accessories that are designed to enhance your bike riding skills, the fact is that you really should not be doing any riding until you have a good bicycle helmet. There is really no excuse not to wear one. These helmets are inexpensive and effective. Each year there are thousands of people who avoid death or serious injury thanks to the fact that they are wearing bike helmets. The helmets need to fit properly so make that they are snug, but comfortable when you try them on.

Is installing a bike rack on my car worth the investment?

If you plan to do any kinds of regular trips that include riding bikes, than it most likely will be worth your investment to install a bike rack. These racks can usually be purchased relatively inexpensively. If you plan to go biking on a trip, you will need to rent a bike when you get there, so you might as well go ahead and spend just a little more money so that you can be able to take your own bike with you. Most people who do install bike racks get fairly regular use out of them.
