Bike Seats

Even though some may think the bike seats with the most padding are always the best, this is not necessarily true for everybody. Before just looking for the padding in a seat, remember to consider a few other things.

• Determine what it is about your old seat that you do not like. Sometimes it is the riding position and not the bike seats that are the real causers of problems.

• Look at the rest of the bike. If you have a bike that is too big or too small, this can change how the bike seats feel. Likewise, it could be the position of the handlebars that makes the bike seats feel awkward. Just because your rear hurts, do not automatically assume that it is just because of the seats.

• Remember that it is the shape of the bike seats and not the padding that is the most important factor when it comes to comfort. It is best to look for support first of all, and softness secondly.

• If you do not ride the bike very often, there are certain kinds of bike seats that might make what would be a harsh ride somewhat easier. Many people choose to use gel seats because it offers enough support as well as enough comfort.

• Leather bike seats are considered by many to be the best to use. Vinyl does not breathe well and in turn could lead to causing you to sweat more. Likewise, vinyl is not a comfortable material for longer rides.

• Some bike seats on mountain bikes include a narrow or a cut-away rear section that allows the rider to easily slide off the back of the seat if the rider needs to move into a certain position with very little problem or effort.

• Wide bike seats should only be used if you plant to do a lot of cycling in an upright position. People who race often would not be well served buying bike seats like this.
